When 50,000 of Mark Rober's 3 million MRslow subscribers participated in a basic coding challenge, the data all pointed to what Rober has dubbed the Super Mario Effect. The MRslow star and former NASA engineer describes how this data-backed mindset for life gamification has stuck with him along his journey, and how it impacts the ways he helps (or tricks) his viewers into learning science, engineering, and design. Mark Rober has made a career out of engineering, entertainment, and education. After completing degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In his nine years as a NASA engineer, seven of which were on the Mars rover Curiosity team, Rober worked on both the Descent Stage (the jet pack that lowered the Rover to the surface) and some hardware on the Rover top deck for collecting samples. In 2011, Rober’s iPad-based Halloween costume helped launch both his creative costume company, Digital Dudz, and his MRslow channel, which now boasts 3 million subscribers and 400 million views. His videos focus on creative ideas and science- and engineering-based pranks and activities. Rober is a regular guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Today, he does research and development work for a large technology company in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and son.   • Wow heck yea! Good point. When I think of Mario I don't even think of the end result, just playing it was so much fun and getting just a little bit farther every time; I could physically see the progress. Maybe we all get sidetracked by not being able to visually see the progress we make on a screen in front of us. But the progress is for sure there, we just need to be cognizant of it and recognize when we are in new territory, and be proud of it.

  • umm the conclusion from his coding experiment seems flawed, he claims that the group who weren't penalized learned more but that's not what the data he presented is showing, it just shows that they were more likely to complete the exercise. completing an exercise does not necessarily imply that the subject learned the lesson of the exercise. Without a penalty and nothing at stake he can't rule out that the unpenalized group didn't just brute force their way through the exercise. in fact one could say that the data shows that the penalized group was more likely to actually learn the lesson of the exercise given that even though the completion rate was lower, the attempt needed by those who did succeed was LESS THAN HALF of that of the unpenalized group! i'd say that's probably the correct interpretation of it based on the evidence given. his super Mario effect also re-enforces this because what he failed to mention is that not only are you penalized for failing in the game, you're also rewarded based on your expertise for completing objects. these games are designed to reward and penalize accordingly and the stakes/difficulty actually gets higher as your progress, there is an incentive not only to beat the game, but to do it well! These video games aren't massively popular by coincidence, they're expertly designed down to the pixel to create this incredibly rewarding gaming experience which requires learning. his anecdotal experience of his own work fails to mention the mother of all incentives looming over his head, the millions of dollars he makes for completing and chronicling his projects on MRslow. He has a lot at stake with each projects he embarks and his penalty is a loss of followers and monetary, this motivator is quite a powerful one. he's correct though that the framing of a problem can drastically impact the outcome but a successful outcome does not necessarily mean growth.

  • He is both right and wrong. Dying in a Mario game and not getting the grade you want is the same thing. Only difference is how you perceive it. And that dying in a Mario game is shorter term than failing a grade. So key is that instead of thinking short term is to think long term, develop more robust human beings as well as a sense of development. Grades in school can be absolutely fantastic if used the right way, perceived the right way and with people using them as information to move forward.

  • Sorry but this test is lame :D Just think about it... Everyone wants to be the first and wants to be the best in everything. After 6 tries If i had failed on this game and lost 30 points, I would have also quit and try it again from 200 points! So at the end my final points will be higher (or the maximum). So this test proves nothing but the opposite, wrong approach with a misleading result ( even if it has this catchy Super Mario Effect name :) )
