Chocolate reduces stress. Fish stimulates the brain. Is there any truth to such popular beliefs? The findings of researchers around the world say yes: It appears we really are what we eat.
A study in a British prison found that inmates who took vitamin supplements were less prone to violent behavior. And in Germany, a psychologist at the University of Lübeck has shown that social behavior is influenced by the ingredients consumed at breakfast. But what really happens in the brain when we opt for honey instead of jam, and fish rather than sausage? Scientists around the world are trying to find out. Neuro-nutrition is the name of an interdisciplinary research field that investigates the impact of nutrition on brain health. Experiments on rats and flies offer new insight into the effects of our eating habits. When laboratory rats are fed a diet of junk food, the result is not just obesity. The menu also has a direct influence on their memory performance. The role of the intestinal flora has been known for some time, but scientists are currently discovering other relationships. So-called "brain food" for example: The Mediterranean diet that’s based on vegetables and fish is said to provide the best nutrition for small grey cells. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, for example, protect the nerve cells and are indispensable for the development of the brain - because the brain is also what it eats!

  • for some reason depression came up in my head while wacthing this. And im convinced that depression has a progressive closed-circuit feedback loop, where the condition, effects and intensity of it are increased while the chance of being cured from it are decreased. It all ties into diet, choice, and our health (both physical and mental) an individual with depression (depending on the severity) will stop seeking food for deficiencies in their bodies and instead seek out food that is comforting or deemed acceptable by the general population giving them the comfort or satisfaction of acceptance/inclusion. By reducing the amount of nutrition in their diet, this will in turn effect their depression state, future food choices, and overall physical stamina. Food, moreover healthy food is key to our health. Depression is dangerous because it encapsulates a person's perceived choices and abilities. Locking them in a personal state of self-isolation and dissatisfaction with their own choices/behaviors/appearances/abilities/accomplishments. this creates an "emptiness" in an individual, causing them to unknowingly react to food as a way to "feel normal" as opposed to feed one's own nutritional needs.

  • At 15:30 they say the most important of the substances mentioned is Tyrosine as it's an important building block of dopamine, which plays a key role in motivation and risk taking. It goes on to say the findings showed the subjects with higher levels of Tyrosine in their blood were more willing to accept the unfair offer. Am I hearing that correctly? I'm trying to understand. Are they saying higher levels of Tyrosine leads to an increase in dopamine (linked to motivation and risk taking), therefore they would be more apt to accept an unfair offer?

  • This was a great documentary! I have literally felt the diminishing returns of eating too much junk for too long. I eat a small cheesecake once a year, on my birthday. One year I had a few slices at another time, and I found myself tired of eating my favorite dessert. Another time I noticed the taste getting worse the more I ate junk day after day
